Our work is founded on the Intimacy on Set Guidelines. A recent film by The Guardian provides a basic introduction to our work:
There is also a 20 minute film on working with these guidelines (password = Gu1delines), and an article in Spotlight also provides an introduction for actors.

Nudity & Intimacy Protocols
Pre-Production of Series
Shoot Day
Post
Pre-Production of Series
- Intimacy Coordinator (IC) to speak with the producer on protocols and what kind of intimacy they are anticipating for the scene / season.
- IC will be made aware of what actors may have already communicated they are willing or not willing to do (in contract or otherwise).
- If lots of intimacy/nudity, the IC will hold a one day workshop on the Intimacy On Set Guidelines with producers, directors, AD’s, etc, and all actors cast to date, or have a private preseason phone call or a sit-down with series regulars engaging in continued intimacy over the season.
- The IC should be put on the distribution for scripts and one-liners.
- If there is a large amount of intimacy, an Intimacy/Nudity meeting shall be scheduled per episode during prep. This should include a producer, the director, AD’s, a writer, and IC to determine the nudity and simulated sex specifics scripted and how we are looking to shoot. If meeting unnecessary, phone calls between the IC and director/AD’s are had.
- Series regulars will have a phone call or conversation with the director to discuss any intimate scene.
- IC will confirm with actors (often via phone) the scene, go over closed set protocols, barriers, rider language, and get insight on how best advocate for them.
- Costumes - IC will meet with costumes beforehand to see costume, consult on barriers
- Make-up - if needed, IC will meet or speak with make-up about merkins or prosthetics
- Nudity or Simulated Sex Rider - whoever is in charge of the nudity rider will consult with IC on the exact language
- Call times - IC will connect with 2nd AD for IC call time.
Shoot Day
- IC will have quick check-ins with actors (a couple of minutes privately before or after hair/makeup), costumes, and director.
- Closed Set - please see separate Closed Set Protocols - only one monitor on, only 1 department head if necessary at monitor.
- Safety meeting before rehearsal: director, EP, IC, 1st AD, actors
- If there is simulated sex: the IC will take a moment with the director to address boundaries and consent, making sure the story is clear, and how the intimacy will be handled, cheated, etc.
- Private Rehearsal will include IC either assisting with movement, language, or safety.
- 1st AD Nudity Calls: “pictures up”, “sound speeds”, “marker,” “pulling robes”, “action”
- 1st AD Cut Calls: “cut”, “covering up”, “covered” no one but costumes enters space until “covered”
- During filming, IC will check in on actors every few takes, and in simulated sex scenes encourage actors to check in with each other.
- During filming, IC will most likely be at the main monitor at the checking frame, ready for notes, check in’s, etc.
Post
- IC will check in with actors a few days after filming for feedback & debrief.
- If any questions or issues should arise post-production with actors, you are always free to reach out to the IC with any concerns.
- IC will write up for each scene the Process and Feedback Summary and share with the production.
