A multi-layered fairy tale by Richard Strauss about two couples in search of profound happiness. This new opera for the Dutch National Opera was Directed by Katie Mitchell, with Conductor Marc Albrecht leading the Netherlands Philharmonic Orchestra.

Set in a raw, realistic world marked by poverty, drugs, and domestic violence, the fairytale-like story of attaining fertility becomes a cinematic and nightmarish tale that urgently poses the question of how far the Empress is willing to go to become pregnant.
