Then along comes an intimacy coordinator, and the first thing I thought was, "Why on earth had we never done this before?" The funnel of information was perfect. Not only did they have rehearsals, but they did talks. They're actors, most handily. They're actors, these intimacy coordinators, so they understand the process of performance.

Thankfully, there was no shame in this scene – and there was no shame involved for the actors working on set either. Everyone I've spoken to who's worked on It's a Sin has sung the praises of all the intimacy coordinators involved – and Callum even goes so far as to describe them as "vital".

Elaborating more on their work, Peter explained that they helped create a safe space through a mix of carefully choreographed rehearsals and deeper talks about the process:

"They took the guys aside, and they asked some questions about the scene, how they felt about it. They also talked about it from a performance perspective. It brought up a lot of thoughts, a lot of feelings, but they did it in a safe space."

Digital Spy: Normal People's Daisy Edgar-Jones says she felt "free" during sex scenes thanks to intimacy coordinator

Normal People star Daisy Edgar-Jones has revealed that she and co-star Paul Mescal were very comfortable filming intimate scenes together for the drama because their work with an intimacy coordinator made them feel "free".

Daisy and Paul's characters – Marianne Sheridan and Connell Waldron – share a turbulent relationship in the BBC / Hulu co-production and the actors had to film a number of sex scenes together.

Daisy has told Vanity Fair that she and her co-star worked closely with Ita O'Brien, who is an expert in working on intimate scenes, and said that she feels more shows would benefit from hiring somebody like her.

"It was an amazing process. I can't believe that it's not been the norm for a very long time because it feels like I don't know how else you would go about doing those scenes," she said. "They are integral to telling the story of a relationship between two people as they grow up. The physical side of things is an incredibly important part of that."

She added that she and Paul worked with Ita to determine what they were each comfortable with doing and said that this had made them feel "more free" when it came to acting out the love scenes.

"We discussed at length with her what exactly we were trying to communicate with each moment," she said. "We would discuss what each other was comfortable with day to day so you never felt like you were going to overstep anybody's boundaries. Weirdly, we were kind of more free, because of the structure that was put in place.

"Strangely, those scenes were some of the least challenging once you kind of got the first few under your belt. You knew exactly what you were doing... so there wasn't much room for nuance."

But through sex and those moments of quiet that follow it, Normal People succeeds in doing what the book does so well, capturing that electricity which fizzes between them and beaming it through the pixels on your screen.

Edgar-Jones and Mescal both credit intimacy co-ordinator Ita O’Brien, who also worked on Sex Education and Gentleman Jack, in helping them to create that fine-tuned atmosphere.

"She was in charge of choreographing those scenes in terms of physical beats, which was really brilliant because it meant that Paul and I were able to just concentrate on the acting part of it," Edgar Jones told Digital Spy and other press.

Digital Spy - The cast of Netflix's Sex Education reveal how intimacy director 'choreographed' their sex scenes

Netflix is going to get down and dirty this week as it launches its new comedy-drama Sex Education.

The series follows a boy and his sex therapist mother who set up an ad-hoc clinic in his school.

With that subject matter you can expect plenty of scenes of people going at it, which even the most talented of actors can struggle with (or in the case of Olivia Colman, involves some devilish pranks).

To get it right, the cast of Sex Education had an 'intimacy director' to choreograph the scenes, and they told Digital Spy and other media that they're glad they did. . .
